Solsticio Compartido 2023
(Shared solstice)
Solsticio compartido (translated as ‘Shared solstice’) is a site-specific performance by Lucia Pizzani featuring Luzmira Zerpa. In collaboration, the two artists will work with sounds and rituals around the summer solstice originating from their home country of Venezuela, that was be in dialogue with the Contemporary Sculpture Fulmer sculpture garden.
The trees on the site were used as the point of departure, and elements in the performance included raw clay and fabrics. Imprinted with images of the forest in Turgua at the outskirts of Caracas where Pizzani grew up, these elements will layer a tropical wild landscape with the Victorian garden at Fulmer to explore ideas of migration, not only related to the artist’s own personal story, but also as a reflection of the imported trees in the garden, such as the Sequoias. This performance forms part of the artist’s ongoing area of research around people, plants and colonial routes that explores the tensions and questions around migratory experiences that arise when feeling both part of, yet apart from one’s origins.
Pizzani’s performance was part of the 7th Edition: the final season (13 May - 29 July 2023) at Contemporary Sculpture Fulmer, guest curated by Jenn Ellis - the founder of Apsara Studio and AORA. Exhibiting emerging to established artists from around the world working across a myriad of mediums from clay to marble, twenty-two outdoor sculptures respond to the sensitivity of the site, from the open grounds to still ponds and forest nooks.
